Battersea Power Station

Clifford Devlin was appointed to carry out the demolition of the Pump House, a Victorian building on the site of the Battersea Power Station redevelopment which will see this 42 acre former industrial brownfield site transformed into a community of homes, offices, retail, community facilities, cultural venues & 18 acres of public space serviced by an extension to the Northern Line underground service.

A survey of the building identified a number of locations of asbestos containing materials including roof sheets, sprayed coatings in the basement plant room and insulation in the boiler room.

The asbestos was decontaminated by Clifford Devlin's in-house Asbestos Division under controlled conditions. Following this, services were capped-off at the site boundary and soft strip of the building carried out.

Before structural demolition commenced several items of historical interest that had been identified to be retained were salvaged. As well as the roof trusses other materials included a number of beams, braces, the barring quadrant and various items of ironmongery including plant and wall plates.

These were carefully removed packaged onsite and transported to storage. Operatives working from perimeter scaffolding demolished the brick roof parapets using hand tools supported by pneumatic equipment. Following this the roof trusses were carefully removed and the remaining structure demolished using an excavator supported by manual methods. Our excavation to remove foundations and hardstandings was observed by archeologists from English Heritage.

Over fifteen thousand bricks were also salvaged and transported to our licenced waste transfer station in Bow where they were cleaned and paletted for re-use.
