Clifford Devlin was appointed to carry out the demolition phase on a major redevelopment in London’s West End. The work was carried out to a 4 storey building in Tottenham Court Road and an adjacent structure in Store Street and has been commissioned by the City of London authority. Costain plc is the main contractor.
The premises were previously retail on the ground floor and offices above. Work involved the installation of an internal and external facade retention scheme to the terra cotta facade, followed by the demolition of the structure behind. Simultaneously, a significant piling operation was carried out in the basement, followed by the construction of transfer beams to take the permanent steel scheme. Asbestos found in the building had been removed in a previous phase.
The demolition project, which was valued at £2.7 million, follows on from similar successful work carried out by Clifford Devlin in other areas of London’s West End recently.
“We have plenty of expertise and experience in carrying out inner-city demolition work,” said Operations Director, Les Rose.
“The proximity of live buildings and pedestrian traffic amplifies the on-site environmental and health and safety considerations which need to managed.”
The Tottenham Court Road phase of the works was handed over in September 2007 with the remainder of the project due for completion in late October 2007.
